Sweeney, Edwards the Exegete: Biblical Interpretation and Anglo-Protestant Culture on the Edge of the Enlightenment (New York: Oxford University Press, 2016), xii + 391 pp., $ 78.00 (ISBN 9780199793228).Jonathan Edwards is well known as a theologian, philosopher, revivalist, and preacher, but his exegetical side is much less known, even among Edwards scholars (7). In spite of previous efforts by scholars such as Stephen Stein and Robert Brown, Edwards the exegete has not drawn the attention of many researchers in the field of American history, early modern thought, and even historical theology. So the hard-labored work of Doug Sweeney—“roughly twelve years” in the making—is necessary even in academic circles in order to provide a better picture of Jonathan Edwards, for, as Sweeney argues, “we fail to comprehend Edwards’ life, thought, and ministry when viewing them apart from his biblical exegesis” (ix). Sweeney needs to recover “The [lost] Biblical World of Jonathan Edwards” (chapter 1) in order to inform the modern reader who has become biblically illiterate. Defining terms of biblical-theological discussions such as ‘supersessionism’ (61) or pre/a/postmillenialism (350) gives the impression that Sweeney is introducing the evangelical faith of the biblical Edwards to the academic world that is more familiar with
