Editorial It is a joy and a privilege to launch the International Journal of Taiwan Studies (ijts), the first internationally collaborative, multidisciplinary, and peer-reviewed academic research journal in English dedicated to Taiwan and Taiwan-related topics. Printed twice a year, this journal will publish articles across the disciplinary divide—from the social sciences, arts, and humanities—as well as articles that adopt an interdisciplinary perspective. Our bottom line is that the journal will disseminate cutting-edge, peer-reviewed research on Taiwan for the academic community as well as policymakers.Taiwan has long been a case study of Chinese culture and society. However, since the 1980s and the 1990s, Taiwan-centred research has emerged as a field in its own right; with economic, social, and cultural transformations sitting alongside analyses of Taiwan’s democratic development. Taiwan studies has evolved and expanded at a vibrant pace, with research moving beyond the island’s diplomatic weakness and economic strength to position Taiwan within discourses about the global, the regional, and the local. Exciting new themes include nationalism and transnationalism, (post)colonialism, multiculturalism, migration, communications, and cinema, to name just a few.Across the world, Taiwan studies centres, programmes, and groups have proliferated, and three regionally organised academic associations act as hubs for research: North http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png
