This journal means to foster communication and build community among scholars interested in applying pragmatic methods to their problems, in all areas of philosophy and across other disciplines. By providing a forum for discussing pragmatism and its uses, this journal offers a meeting-place for exchanging philosophical ideas in an academic world that is increasingly isolated by specialization. Pragmatism itself is designed to foster multi-disciplinary approaches. Its tradition of pluralism from the beginning stood opposed against philosophy's contraction into departmentalization with its own special problems and rationalistic methods. Founders Charles Peirce and William James worked at the intersections of natural science, physiology, psychology, sociology, and religion. John Dewey and George Mead, who would have been equally comfortable in a psychology or sociology or education or political science department, called for philosophy's blending with the other social and behavioral sciences to form one broad field of cultural studies focused on human problems. Their students took this vision to heart;
