Corporations: the bookish and the l e s s b o o k i s h ^ Gordon Graham Eric de Bellaigue's piece on "Mergers, Acquisitions and Takeovers" (see page six) has reminded me of a modest investigation I undertook about a year ago. I wrote to fifteen of t h e vv^orld's largest publishing corporations a n d asked t h e m h o w m u c h of their business was in books. In most cases, I already had a fair idea, because I h a d assembled t h e i r a n n u a l reports for another purpose. To select t h e targets, I set three criteria. First, each qualifying corporation had to be genuinely multinational, ie have roots and substantial turnover in a number of c o u n t r i e s .
