Editorial 6 Ecclesiology Editorial 7 Editorial Anglican–Protestant Dialogue T his general issue of Ecclesiology contains a ‘themed’ section, comprising two articles on the important statement of Protestant ecclesiology, the Leuenberg study The Church of Jesus Christ . The first article is an exposition of both the statement and the process in which it stands by a committed advocate; the second is a differentiated discussion containing elements both of agreement and critique by an Anglican dialogue partner. Die Kirche Jesu Christi , now ten years old, is the major theological product of the continuing development of the Leuenberg Agreement of 1973. In the mood of post-war reconciliation and reconstruction, the Leuenberg Agreement overcame the historic condemnations between Lutheran and Reformed churches in the post-Reformation period, so making ‘table and pulpit fellowship’ possible between these two major families of Protestant churches in Europe. The church fellowship brought into being by that historic agreement now comprises 104 churches and includes the pre-Reformation communities of the Waldensians and the Czech Brethren and the post-Reformation Methodist churches, none of whom were party to the original condemnations and the consequent process of reconciliation.
