Richard Hays’ Echoes of Scripture in the Letters of Paul (1989) was such a book. It transformed the study of biblical intertextuality. Now, after over a quarter of a century, Hays has published his long-awaited Echoes of Scripture in the Gospels. This is more than just a companion volume, since Hays has learned and grown from the lively conversation generated by his earlier book. He also had presented the main lines of his inquiry in his Hulsean Lectures at Cambridge published as Reading Backwards (Baylor, 2014) a work he referred to as an arrabon of the book now under review.The plan of this book is straightforward: a chapter on each gospel, an introduction, and a conclusion. Hays notes how each of the four evangelists have their own distinctive way of referring to scripture. For example, Matthew’s use of formula quotations makes direct and straightforward the claim that Jesus fulfills the scriptural promises. By contrast, Mark’s use of scripture is much more allusive.
