LANGUAGE General No new work on general linguistics has been published during the year, but previously published articles have been collected in two important works of widely divergent scope: L. C. Michels, Filologische Opstellen, I; Stoffen uit de Middeleeuwen (Zwolle, Tjeenk Willink) and Keur uit de verspreide geschriften van Dr H. J. Pos, I (Assen, Van Gorcum; Arnhem, Van Loghum Slaterus ). The inclusion of the former in the Zwolse reeks is a welcome recognition of the writer's contribution to linguistic studies for nearly half a century. The choice of articles now reprinted as a posthumous tribute to Professor Pos falls pri­ marily on those not readily available in the publications in which they originally appeared. The subtitle, Taal, Mens en Cultuur indicates the main theme of these essays in which Pos evolves his own assessment of the true roles of philosophy and philology in the study of language. A 4th ed. of Nederlandse Spraakkunst (Groningen, Wolters) is at last associated with the name of M. Schonfeld who was to have collaborated with C. G.
