This book is the first balance-sheet of the principal changes in the agrarian economy which occurred during the last five years in Egypt, Syria and Iraq. Its main theme is to analyse the particular dynamic of each of the three countries: in Egypt an agrarian reform has removed, by revolutionary means, the ruling owners of vast estates from their politically dominating position and attempted a redistribution of income; in Syria large tracts of new land are brought under cultivation by private merchant-capitalist entrepreneurs ; and in Iraq an enormous revenue from oil is spent by the State and its Development Board on large-scale schemes of flood-control, irrigation and land reclamation. What have been the effects of these changes on the fall£hin and on the social and political structure of the three countries ?
