The aim is to provide an account of the "secret" of the Qumran community's remark- able spiritual strength, which is to be found in their esoteric doctrines of divine election, eschatology, and messianic expectations. A concern to show the value of the Qumran literature for understanding the origins of Christianity, and the similar piety and belief shared by both, is apparent throughout.
