Or more precisely, how is one to read Heidegger after Derrida, after the very possibility and delimi- tation of Heidegger's texts have been shaken and made to tremble in their core? If indeed Derrida solicits the ontological difference in his reading of Heidegger, as he indicates in "Diffirance," we must inquire not only into what is distinguished in this solicitation but also into what is deferred and post- poned in this very distinction. Our question then concerns what remains unsaid in Derrida's early treatment of Heidegger, and the possibilities that this silence elicits. It is a question of the excess of Derrida's solicitation. An inscription taken from Of Grammatology provides the interpretive direc- tive for these questions. In that text Derrida indicates that "[R]ather than protect Nietzsche from the Heideggerian reading, we should perhaps offer him up to it completely, underwriting that interpretation without reserve."' Is it then a matter of sacrificing Nietzsche to the Heideggerian reading, and so offering him up as the last metaphysician?
