Collation of the Courtship Behaviour of the Sympatric Species Drosophila Melanogaster and Drosophila Simulans

Collation of the Courtship Behaviour of the Sympatric Species Drosophila Melanogaster and... COLLATION OF THE COURTSHIP BEHAVIOUR OF THE SYMPATRIC SPECIES DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER AND DROSOPHILA SIMULANS by PH. WELBERGEN, F. R. VAN DIJKEN and W. SCHARLOO (Department of Population- and Evolutionary Biology, University of Utrecht, Padualaan 8, Utrecht, The Netherlands) (With 8 Figures) (Acc. 1-1-1986) Introduction The courtship of Drosophila is a process of interaction between male and female. Information with sexual purport is transmitted through visual (SPIETH, 1966; CoNNOLLY et al., 1969; THORIG et al., 1981), acoustical (EWING & BENNET-CLARK, 1968; VON SCHILCHER, 1976; KYRIACOU & HALL, 1982), chemical (SHOREY & BARTELL, 1970; AVERHOFF & RICHARD- SON, 1974; TOMKINS et al., 1980; ANTHONY & JALLON, 1982), and tactile signals (ROBERTSON, 1983). These signals are organised in a repertoire of movements and postures in both sexes, which can be classified as elements of courtship behaviour. Although the series of acts varies quantitatively within a species (KOREF-SANTIBANEZ, 1972); CROSSLEY & McDONALD, 1979), there is a vast amount of evidence that these elements are typically performed according to a characteristic pattern for any given species (SPIETH, 1952; BASTOCK & MANNING, 1955; BROWN, 1964; SPIETH, 1966). Ethological studies of closely-related species illustrate these stereotyped differences in behaviour (MANNING, 1959; KOREF-SANTIBANEZ, 1963; BROWN, 1966; http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Behaviour Brill
