Claudia Card, Confronting Evils: Terrorism, Torture, Genocide (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2010), xix + 329 pages. ISBN: 9780521899611 (hbk.). Hardback/Paperback: $99.00/ $33.99. Claudia Card’s Confronting Evils is a deeply thoughtful work that discusses painful issues of great importance. While Prof. Card uses analytic methods to understand questions about both the concept of evil and specific evils, she never reduces the issues to intellectual puzzles. Because the book is strongly grounded in facts about various evils, the horrific reality of these evils confronts the reader throughout the book, as does the author’s unrelenting drive to understand them. Since the book consists of ten very substantial chapters, it is impossible to do more than sketch the book’s contents, especially since Card cites and discusses an impressive array of other writers. What I can do is to assure readers that much can be learned from the author’s efforts to confront the evils that are the focus of her examination. Confronting Evils continues the inquiries begun in Prof. Card’s 2002 book, The Atrocity Paradigm: A Theory of Evil ; it is nonetheless a self-standing work.
