Chinese Traditional Values and Modernization 113 Wu Teh yao, Ph.D. Political Science Department University of Singapore Chinese Traditional Values and Modernization From time to time, there appear on earth great civilizations that endear to the cherished memories of man throughout the ages, for example, the Egyptian, the Aegean, the Babylonian or the Mayan civilization. And from time to time, there also appear on earth great civilizations of splendour and glory that stir the imaginations of man. Their ideas, values and institutions are still very much in existence as they were twenty centuries ago. Such could be said of the Greco-Roman civilizations which together with the Hebraic compositely make up what is called western civilization. Today, the whole world lives under the impact of this brilliant civilization in ideas of progress, values of government, institutions of economy, and in science and technology. This brilliant civili- zation may be likened to a diamond. But a diamond has its sharp cutting edges that posture conflict and war and these in turn might have been the causes for the eventual decline and death of civilization. Another such civilization which may not have the same quality of brilliance as the western civilization is, nevertheless, more enduring.
