Contrary to the usual scholarly practice of examining the Russian revolutionary move- ment in its strictly national context, typically with an emphasis on the unique features of each trend within the radical camp, Naarden wants to study the history of Russian socialism as an integral component in the European socialist tradition. The effort is justified and praiseworthy indeed because the Russian revolutionaries, be they Social Democrats or ad- herents of other socialist trends, owed much to Western definitions of socialist principles and invariably depended on European ideologies in developing their own dogmatic posi- tions. Equally significant is that by surveying the Russian labor movement within the all-Euro - pean framework and by stressing similarities rather than differences, the author illuminates certain shadowy aspects in the history of socialist parties
