The catalogue begins with six introductory essays, of which the most striking are Klaus Grubmuller's 'Zur Geschichte der Fabel in Antike und Mit- telalter' and Christian L. Kuster's 'Die gedruckte Fabelillustration im 15. und 16. Jahrhundert'. The most important writer of fables from classical Antiquity is obviously the Phrygian slave Aesop (7th century B.C.). To his works - ifhe is indeed the author! - everything connected with fables can be traced back until the middle of the six- teenth century, after which new collections of fables, like De warachtighefabulen der dieren (Bruges 1567) and the seventeenth-century fables of La Fontaine, start to ap- pear.
