First, it is worth having Cracraft's introduction, which is brief b u t adequate, given our meager knowledge of Consett. It makes two essential points: Consett, chaplain to the British Factory in Russia, was a champion o f an enlightened Christianity, which he found embodied in the Ecclesiastical Regulation; this reorganization o f the Church, he believed, presaged a more general "Reformation o f Doctrines (p. 27)" in the faith o f the Russians. Second, he was an active participant in the creation o f the Petrine legend. By translating and publishing the writings and orations of Prokopovich, Gabriel Buzhinskii, Huyssen, the coronation prociamation for Catherine I, and a rare laudatory account o f Menshikov's career, he identified himself with that (ultimately defeated) party in the succession struggles after 1725. The most valuable piece in this collection is Feofan's lengthy Oration on Peter's Name Day (pp. 288-336), which does evidentially what the better-known Funeral Oration did only rhetorically; it deserves a wider audience, as does Buzhinskii's address on the first anniversary. o f Peter's death, which is presented here in Latin and English.
