Book Reviews/Comptes Rendus BOOK REVIEWS/COMPTES RENDUS Zinovii Fogel. Vasilii Ermilov. Moscow: "Sovetskii khudozhnik", 1975. 134 pp. 1 r. 28 k. It is not surprising that after so many years a monograph on one of the foremost leaders of the Ukrainian avant-garde in art has been published in the Soviet Union, a country which is now rehabilitating artists who for the longest time have been forgotten. While by no means an exhaustive text on the life and work of Vasyl' Ermilov, Zinovii Fogel's book does focus on the achievements of the artist and his contributions to the development of modern artistic strains in the Soviet Union. The only other monograph published on Ermilov, issued in 1931, was written by V. Polishchuk, a colleague of the artist and his biographer. The present publication is a retrospec- tive look at Ermilov's artistic contributions to Ukrainian art and Soviet art in general. Vasyl' Dmytrovych Ermilov (1894-1967) spent most of his life in Kharkiv, where he received the majority of his training. His talents ranged from creative book design and graphics to decorative arts, architectural plans, and constructivist works. He is noted for his distinctive "ermilovian script" and was especially active in the agitational propagandistic movements http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png The Soviet and Post Soviet Review Brill
