Adriaan de Groot began this study in the late 1930's as his doctoral dissertation at the University of Amsterdam. It was first published in Dutch in 1946, and he translated it into English in 1965. This current volume is the second edition of that English language version, though changed in only minor ways from the first. Given this background, its significance for a contemporary audience may surprise many readers. Its importance is due to de Groot's having unearthed a fertile source of data about thinking, the one topic whose import psychology has acknowledged while it has bemoaned its intractability to traditional research approaches. In fact, now more than ever de Groot's work has become a focus of interest, due to an application that has been made of this text. It has become an empirical reference point for psychologists seeking to formulate information processing theories of thinking based on computer simulation models of chess playing.
