Book Reviews BOOK REVIEWS Christiansen-Ruffman, Linda (ed.), The Global Feminist Enlightenment: Women and Social Knowledge. Madrid, Spain: International Sociological Association, 1998. 131 pages. The history of this edited collection tells an important story about the cur- rent status of "women and social knowledge." Editor Linda Christiansen- Ruffman, an active member of the International Sociological Association's (ISA) Research Committee on Women in Society, explains that 7he Global Feminist Enlightenment is one in a series of books published by the ISA aimed to publicize the association, invite new members, and foster intellectual dialogue. The project was initiated by Immanuel Wallerstein, the ISA pres- ident from 1994 to 1998, and involved selecting prominent scholars organized into ten world regions who would convene regional working conferences. At each conference, papers would be selected and published in the pre- Congress series "Social Knowledge: Heritage, Challenges, Perspective." These books would provide the basis for discussions to be held at the 1998 Montreal World Congress of Sociology. Had not feminist sociologists taken action, dialogue about feminist scholarship would have been all but absent from the Congress, and this volume - which represents feminist sociological perspectives from scholars in various world regions - would not exist.
