The English abstract accompanying La Famille 13 dans l’evangile de Marc modestly describes this work as, “an enlarged, wholly up-to-date and thoroughly revised presentation of Kirsopp and Silva Lake’s 1941 publication.” In the opinion of this reviewer, this description is far too modest. As good as the work of the Lakes was on this subject, Lafleur’s effort is better. He plows new ground in so many places that it is an injustice to refer to his work simply as a revision of someone else’s. The reader will quickly realize that this book is a completely new work which stands on its own and represents a unique contribution to this interesting anomaly referred to as Family 13. If Newton’s shibboleth about “seeing farther because we stand on the shoulders of giants” is to be accurately applied in this case, the giant is Lafleur, not Lake. The first chapter begins with the history of Family 13. In his presentation, Lafleur takes no shortcuts. He carefully defines the historical emergence of each witness in turn.
