Peter Riedlberger’s (henceforth R.) book on the fifth-century Platonic philosopher Domninus of Larissa contains new editions and translations of and commentaries on three works that are attributed to this thinker: the Encheiridion, How to Remove a Ratio from a Ratio , and the Scholia to Nicomachus . According to the author, the main contribution of this book does not lie in the textual study of these works, which except for the Scholia were edited and translated in the past, but in the attempt to show that Domninus was “a fairly standard late antique philosopher” (Abstract). In substantiating this contention, R. claims to revise what he regards as the common view of Domninus, namely that he was “a Euclidean maverick among his methodologically loose peers” (p. 13). His point of departure is Paul Tannery’s claim 1 that Domninus’ Encheiridion attests to a serious reaction against Nicomachus of Gerasa’s Introduction to Arithmetic that reflects an original attempt to return to Euclid’s teaching in an era of complete scientific decadence.
