The fi rst chapter deals with the ethical commitment on the part of the Greek and Roman philosophers to humanity (Pythagoras, Plato, Aristotle, stoicism; the idea of philanthropy between scepticism and dogmatism in the new Academy, Panetius, Poseidon, Antiochus of Ascalon and Cicero; humanism and transcendence). The second chapter is devoted to the paradigm of human nature and the human condition. Here, the focus is on the aspect of ethical behaviour as a result of being human: the concept of socialisation versus a-socialisation, the incum- bent duties, virtues, the human “family” and the case of the slaves. The third chapter treats the paradigm of creation where the main problem is likeness to the divine and imitatio dei . The fi nal chapter deals with the topic of neighbours (Leviticus 19:18, “thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself ”). The work is supplemented by a rich bib- liography and an index of ancient authors, texts and modern authors.
