Bibliographie BIBLIOGRAPHIE CHARLES S. GARDNER, Chinese traditional Historiography (Harvard Historical monographs XI), XI + 120 pp. 1938. Dr. Gardner had rendered a real service to students of Sinology by this excellent little book. In a lucid exposition he discusses the characteristics of Chinese historiography, its motivation, the textual and historical criticism, its synthesis, its style and its formal classi- fication. Moreover, in a series of lengthy footnotes, he presents the results of the critical work done by the principal Chinese and Western scholars on early Chinese texts. The amount of information, based upon wide and well-digested reading, which is packed within these pages, is truly astounding. This makes the book, small though it be, a veritable introduction into methods and problems of historical research. The author's style, though very clear, is almost as pithy and succinct as that of the Chinese texts which he discusses and for the novice it will not always make easy reading. It might have been better if he had taken up some of the more important problems, sucb as those centering round the Shu-chil1g and the Tso-chit(i.it, and had discussed them as "school-examples" of critical research in a separate chapter.
