43 Beyond the Individual and Into the World: A Call to Participation in the Larger Purposes of the Spirit on the Basis of Pentecostal Theology Jeffrey T. Snell* Recently in these pages, Jon Ruthven, Assistant Professor of System- atic Theology at Regent University, addressed Benjamin Warfield's polemic of cessationism of the charismata. Contrary to Warfield, Ruthven concluded that the gifts of the Spirit are alive and well. Significantly, Ruthven noted that the charismata serve to validate, or fulfill, the Spirit's eschatological role, moving beyond the more tradi- tional boundaries of the inner-person placed on the Spirit's work.1 Similarly, Richard Mouw, Professor of Christian Philosophy and Ethics at Fuller Theological Seminary, among others, has earlier developed another non-traditional area within pneumatology, the Spirit's broader activity in the world.2 This "new" line of thought seems responsible for the majority of new insights within Pentecostal theology. Let us continue to explore, then, the ramifications of the fulfillment of the Old Testament promises that the Spirit would be "poured out upon all eschatalogical generations who believe, begin- ning with those in the New Testament era (Isa. 47:3, 59:21; Joel 2 :28- 32 ; cf.
