A Documentary Account of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission and Human Rights Struggle in the Congo, 1890-1918, Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1996, xxii, 580 pp., 90 04 10239 6 This collection of documents is of considerable utility: at the heart of the archive is the dispute between the missionary lobby and the abuses of Leopold 11's red rubber regime in the Congo Free State. The documents, which are drawn from a variety of collections in both Europe and North America, essentially speak for themselves but the editor identifies each and offers excellent critical apparatus. Fifty pages of introduction are informative but do not over-impose interpretation. Part of the distinctiveness of the American Presbyterian Congo Mission of the southern-states based Presbyterian Church in the US was that it attempted to send out black and white missionaries in equal num- bers, some of whom are shown to have possessed clay feet in terms either of their propensity to self-enrichment or sexual misconduct.
