Abstract

249 "BEFORE PHARAOH CONQUERED GAZA" (JEREMIAH XLVII 1) Herodotus tells us about a campaign of Necho in Western Asia. He writes that "...and with his land army (he) met and defeated the Syrians at Magdolus, taking the great Syrian city of Cadytis after the battle" (II 159).' These events have been fully explained by E. Lipinski, AION 32 (1972), pp. 235-41, who recognizes that Herodotus has preserved a valuable account, which has enlarged our understanding of the historical events told by both the Bible (Jer. xlvii) and the Chronicles of Chaldaean Kings. 2 Lipinski shows that the battle between the Babylonians and the Egyptians was fought at Magdolus in Egypt.3 Nebuchadrezzar was defeated and Necho pursued the Babylonians as far as Philistia, where he con- quered the town of Gaza. These events happened between the very last days of 601 B.C.E. and the early months of 600 B . C . E.4 4 Still, the term "Syrians" in the tale of Herodotus needs elucida- tion. Here Herodotus himself comes to our aid. In describing the different peoples and their weapons in Xerxes' army, he says: "These are called by the Greeks Syrians, but the foreigners called them Assyrians"
