Association of an Unknown Fungus With Potato Cyst Nematodes, Globodera Rostochiensis and G. Pallida ASSOCIATION OF AN UNKNOWN FUNGUS WITH POTATO CYST NEMATODES, GLOBODERA ROSTOCHIENSIS AND G. RUMPENHORST Biologische Bundesanstalt für Land- und Forstwirtschaft, Institut für Nematologie, D-4400 Münster, Federal Republic of Germany A fungus associated with eggs of G. rostochiensis was found in a population from Pont near Cologne. Identification of the fungus was not possible as neither a suitable culture medium nor asexual spores were found. Fusarium spp., mainly F. oxysporum, were always associated with it. None of the isolated Fusarium spp. was found to be the causal organism. Inoculations in pots were carried out with these fungi in different combinations with healthy nematodes on a potato cultivar. Treatments wherein the fungus was inoculated prior to the nematodes or where both pathogens were infected simultaneously gave maximum egg infection, i.e., up to 70%. It was observed that the fungus destroyed the larval contents within the eggs. The infection by the fungus is suspected to occur at a late stage of embryonic formation. The fungus was able to infect various pathotypes of G. rosiochiensis and G. pallida.
