Of the complete critical editions I mention only Van Leeuwen’s (1893-1906) and Coulon’s (1923-1930), the latter of which quickly replaced Hall & Geldart’s Oxford Text (1900-1901, revised 1906-1907) as the standard reference text, and finally Sommerstein’s edition (1980-2002). Dover’s edition of Clouds (1968) was the starting point of a series of editions with com- mentary, which until now includes nine comedies. 1) Nevertheless, N.G. Wilson, in the preface to Aristophanea states (p. v): “. . . however much progress has been made by modern scholars towards reliable editions of Greek authors, there is still much to engage the interest of the thoughtful reader.
