Apostolic Networks in Britain: New Ways of Being Church

Apostolic Networks in Britain: New Ways of Being Church Book Reviews / Pneuma 30 (2008) 315-370 361 William K. Kay, Apostolic Networks in Britain: New Ways of Being Church (Milton Keynes, UK, and Waynesboro, Ga.: Paternoster, 2007). xxii + 377 pp. £29.99 / $40.99 paperback. This substantial book by William Kay (Director, Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies, University of Wales, Bangor) explores restorationist apostolic networks which first exploded on the British religious stage in the early 1970s. He defines apostolic ministries as those “centred around the guiding ministry of an apostle . . . everything is vested in the apostle and the charismata of the apostle” (p. 20). Driving these British apostolic networks is restorationism’s `big idea’, namely, that “the power and pattern of the early church can be restored to the contemporary church” (p. 318). Thus, these networks eschewed the trappings of denominationalism such as traditionalism, hierarchichal governance (except, of course, the offices of apostle and prophet), and congregational voting, while simultaneously focusing on an apostle-driven vision that conceives of the living and breathing church as a totalist way of life (rather than a part-time exercise), and on the development of strong apostle-congregational and inter-congregational rela- tionships in a bid to emulate the New Testament http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Pneuma Brill
