An Intersex in Calanus Hyperboreus 1) AN INTERSEX IN CALANUS HYPERBOREUS 1) BY ROBERT J. CONOVER Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole (Mass.), U.S.A. During laboratory studies of the behavior, feeding, and respiration of the large cold-water copepod Calanus hyperboreus (Kroyer, 1838) (see Conover, 1962), a stage V copepodid kept in the laboratory for about two months molted into an adult with a male-type, 5-segmented urosome; its first antennae were apparently lost during the molt. It was larger than any male observed in nature or produced in laboratory molts and unlike them it fed readily in the laboratory. The specimen proved to be an intersex. Within a month bright red-orange, irregularly shaped masses appeared in the dorsal part of the body (pl. II). In a typical gravid female Calanus hyperboreus, the eggs are bright red-orange, lying in oviducts on either side of the fat body in the dorsal portion of the body cavity. However, females have occasionally been found in which the gonadal material, rather than forming discrete oocytes, accumulated in the oviducts as rather amorphous orange-colored masses similar to those shown in pl.
