Abstract

MISCELLANEA ADVERSATIVE KAI AGAIN Although the adversative use of xai is common in all periods and all kinds of Greek literature it continues to form a source of misunderstanding. In Thuc. Marchant translates 'and yet' 2), but this gives too strong a contrast. The difficulty disappears if we simply translate XOCL by 'but'. There is no 'glissement dans la pensee' (Romilly) 3), except a slight causal ellipsis: 'but [they persisted, for]', which may be equally implied in the modern usage of 'but'.
