Stefán B. Sigurdsson Speech delivered in the third Polar Law Symposium held in Akureyri on 911 September 2010 Minister of Education Katrin Jakobsdóttir, Honoured guests at the "Third Akureyri Symposium on Polar Law", It is a pleasure to welcome you all to the University of Akureyri where we will discuss "Human rights and good governance". Like most of you have heard Iceland has been going through economic crisis and this university has been going through a serious cuts of funding the last three years like almost all activity funded by the state. We have lost about 20% of the funding since 2008 so it is not strange that it has affected the activity here. We have tried to avoid lay off of academic staff but instead most of them have taken cut-back in their salaries. We have also tried to save money by reorganizing directly or indirectly almost all programs at the school. One of the changes we were forced to do was to reduce the intake of students in polar law from every year to every other year. Therefore there will be no new students in 2010 but we aim to start again at a full force
