Haec si uera sunt, iam editores oportebit libellum uenustum spuriis carminibus tandem expulsis ad pristinam formam redigere. Etiamnum uix credam Vergilium ipsum Catalepton scripsisse, at hoc tamen pro certo habeo: unus poeta et elegans et Vergilianae aetatis gnarus hunc libellum Vergilio haud indignum composuit. Secundo igitur saeculo ineunte cognominis illius consularis haud ignari fuerunt harum satirarum lectores. Meminerimus etiam saepissime iocatos esse Romanos de cog- nominum suorum significatione (vide sis quae in Philologo 117, 1973, 137 protuli de Hor. 15, 12), et apud eos vas magnum ad aquam retinendam refrigerandamque gillonem nominatum esse (TLL s.v., W. Hilgers, Lat. Gefdssna?nen, Diisseldorf 1969, 18q; cf. 1. Kajanto, The Latin Cognomina, Helsinki 1965, 344). Ampla igitur vasis mensura in ipso cognomine subaudienda est, amplissimaeque Gillonis inguinum mensurae a poeta commemoratae comparanda.
