Acknowledgements Acknowledgements • v Acknowledgements First, the editors wish to acknowledge the indispensable support they received from their respective universities – California State University, Monterey Bay and California State University, Sacramento – for the sabbatical leaves they were granted by these institutions. This sabbatical support enabled the editors to develop the proposal that was accepted by Brill to publish this collection, to undertake the preliminary research, travel to various countries where they made contact with some of the contributors, to solicit the various contributions, and to complete the initial organizing tasks associated with the publication of this international collection of essays on globalization and health. The editors also wish to acknowledge their appreciation for the invitation they received from the Institute of Global Conflict and Cooperation at the University of California, San Diego to participate in the Teaching Seminar on Health and Global Politics held on February 18-19, 2000 at the campus of the University of California, San Francisco. The conceptual origins of this collection of essays arose out of the stimulating dialogue engendered at this seminar between the participants and the international team of presenters.
