A REVIEW OF PROPHETIC PENTECOSTALISM IN CHILE BY FRANS KAMSTEEG† Jeffrey Gros* National Conference of Catholic Bishops, 3211 4th Street, NE, Washington, DC 20017-1194, USA email: firstname.lastname@example.org t Frans Kamsteeg, Prophetic Pentecostalism in Chile (Lanham, MD: Scare- crow, 1998). * Jeffrey Gros, FSC (Phd, Fordham University) is Associate Director, Secre- tariat for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the National Conference of Catholic Bishops. The witness of the Catholic Vicariate of Solidarity and the Te Deums, celebrated by Chilean Pentecostals during the years of state terrorism under Pinochet, are widely known. What has been less documented is the witness of Pentecostal churches that did not contribute to legitimat- ing the military dictatorship, but took an alternative pastoral course. This is an anthropological/sociological study of a development agency and the church that spawned it, in the context of development studies. The method the author uses in studying the La Victoria congregation of the Misi6n Iglesia Pentecostal (MIP) and the Servicio Evangilico Para El Desarrollo (SEPADE) is that of participant/observer based in ’practice theory’ . The MIP is a 40-year-old denomination which became a member of the World Council of Churches in 1961 and has undergone a transition from traditional sectarianism
