239 2. P. VAN GUNST NAAR A. BOONEN. KOPERGRAVURE 3. W. VAILLANT. MARIA VAN OOSTERWIJCK. 1671. DETAIL. AMSTERDAM, RIJKSMUSEUM. A Portrait of the Paintress Maria van Oosterwijck and the Poet Dirk Schelte by B. J. A. Renckens Ill. 1 shows the portraits of a gentleman and a lady who might be regarded as a married couple but who at the same time embody an allegorical design, viz. the Art of Painting inspiring the Art of Writing or Poetry. The lady closely resembles the paintress Maria van Ooster- wijck painted by W. Vaillant in 1671 (ill. 3). In 1673 Maria inspired the Amsterdam poet Dirk Schelte to a poem in which he paid homage to her for her flower pieces. The double portrait fits in well with this time. Comparison of the man with Schelte's portrait (ill. 2), an engra- ving by P. van Gunst after Arn. Boonen, 1708, suggests that the poet is represented here. The intimate representation of a married man and father with an unmarried woman seems un- usual and "bold". The double portrait is at the art dealer's Gooden and Fox Ltd., London, and is attrib- uted to Jurriaen Ovens. The author is inclined to believe that Gerard de Lairesse might be the painter.
