She is carefully placing her pajamas, hair brush, and favorite doll into a large paper sack. After this packing is done, she waits eagerly by the phone for her friend to call to say that her supper is over and that they can now begin their overnight together. She is eager and happy as she puts on her coat, then grabs her sack in one arm and my hand with the other hand in order to walk to her friend's house down the block. The two girls giggle when they see each other and together they run off to the bedroom. Three-quarters of an hour later, we receive a phone call from her friend's mother. My daughter has been crying uncontrollably for half an hour and wants to come home. There is no apparent reason for this; all she can say is that she wants to go home.
