Measuring insulin-like growth factors: why, where and how? Growth factor research is considered almost de rigueur for the modern endocrine department. The current level of activity in the field is highlighted by its being the subject of more presentations than any other topic at the last couple of Annual Meetings of the American Endocrine Society. The avant-garde in this new movement have been those studying the insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). This is partly for historical reasons, partly due to their distinction in having an obvious endocrine role in addition to their local autocrine/paracrine activity (Sara & Hall 1990), and also partly because they are more accessible to investigation. This, in turn, is due to the availability of well-published techniques and their high concentrations in body fluids compared with most other growth factors under normal physiological conditions.
