In a number of significant publications over the course of a few years, Iain Edgar has attempted to place the imagination, and dreaming, on the anthropological map. Edgar crucially presents the imagination and dreams as tangible, situated dimensions of people’s thinking and being, rather than regarding them as philosophically unknowable phenomena or confining them to discursive and cultural analysis. This presents a substantial challenge in that rather than discussing the imaginary at levels of cognitive or discursive abstraction that have little relation to people’s lived experiences, Edgar attempts to practically engage with how people consciously or otherwise use the processes of imagining and dreaming in their lives. This means researching the imagination and dreams in action as part of a practical fieldwork study and therefore necessitates a range of appropriate research methods and techniques.
