Personal C o m p u t i n g The Internet and Interactive Television The idea of a National Information Infrastructure (NII) is in the air. The Clinton administration feels the NII can "transform the lives of the American people" , and N I I has made the covers of Time and Newsweek. 1 T h e N I I is old hat to members of the computer science corn- ! munity. We have had the , Internet, a global information infrastructure, for many years. But Time is not focusing on the Internet. Time is interested in home shopping and movies on demand, not email and ftp. Two amorphous groups, let's call them the Internet community and the interactive T V community, are working on i n f o r m a t i o n infrastructure. While there is similarity in what they envision, there are also significant differences in their worldviews.
