The method combines special programs with a basic data processing program package. The duplex operation gives the system greater reliability. After achieving the required level of integration, both computers do similar processing on the same inputs and continually cross-check the intermediate and final results. i. B a c k g r o u n d and Purpose of the Duplex Program This paper presents a method of programming two digital (,omputers for cooperative operation. Tim method utilizes direct memory-to-memory tt'ansmission devices lhat have been recently developed. M a n y of the tee,hniques developed for this program are generally applicable to other duplex programs. Some of these are: a single program for both computers; duplex programming added to a data processing package; the optional interchange of the roles of the computers; proceeding through levels of integration; and, independent as well as cooperative operation.
