DeMillo , Lipton and Perlis (SEN 3&2) . The response has asked Dijkstra t o point to "some real-life examples" of increasing confidence in a piece of "real software" by a proof of correctness . It may help to calm the heated exchange to state that we at Chase Manhatta n Bank have substantially increased the confidence in and reliabilit y of "real software" by the extensive use of assertions (which ar e one of the effective tools of proving program correctness) . Two examples will illustrate : 1 . A system to generate a processing history for each of 2 . 2 million checks processed daily at Chase was required in orde r to resolve inquiries about missing and free checks .
