The Regulation of Carbohydrate Metabolism There is little doubt that most major pathways of carbohydrate metabolism are now known. These sequences of enzyme catalyzed reactions have been established by a variety of techniques and experimental approaches involving both in vitro and in vivo investigations. For some time increasing attention has been given to those aspects of this work which are relevant to the regulation of metabolic rates: it is axiomatic that the rates of both synthetic and degradative processes do not remain constant but vary according to the physiological requirements of the cell. This review is concerned with the regulation of enzyme activity which in turn controls the flux through metabolic pathways. The article will concentrate on the metabolic significance of observations rather than on the interpretation of the phenomena in terms of the theoretical predictions of particular models. The possible molecular mechanisms involved in the regulation of enzyme activity· have been discussed elsewhere (87, 88, 1 15). Emphasis will be given to work on metabolic regulation with higher plants and the enzymes obtained therefrom, but consideration will be given, where appropriate, to investigations on mammalian tissues and microorganisms and their enzymes.
