The Formation of Spectral Lines

The Formation of Spectral Lines This review is addressed to the nonspecialist reader and is intended to provide an introduction to the physic s and pheno menol ogy of the radiation field in spectral lines. Results that give the maximum insight are stressed and selected, while technical details are suppressed. Because of restrictions on space and because of the appearance or pro m ise of several other relevant books and reviews, we have omitted all discussion of direct astrophysical application. We especially recommend the recent books of Jefferies (1968) and Mihalas (1970) for discussions of line formation in stellar atmospheres, the review of the solar Hand K lines by Linsky & Avrett (1970), the forth. coming review by Mihal as (19 72 ) on the o reti cal stellar spectra, and the reo view of line formation in planetary nebulae by H ummer (1968a) . We exclude all discussion of computational methods, for which see the reviews of Hum mer & Rybicki (1967) , Avrett (1971), and Auer (1971). The important work of the Leningrad school could not be given the prominence it deserves, but this omission will be partially redressed by the translation, now under way, of Ivanov's (1971) remarkable book.
