Fibronectin is a major protein of blood and tissues. It has been intensively studied because of its many interactions with cells and other macromole cules. Fibronectin is a principal component of the extracellular matrix, and its most important function seems to be in tissue remodelling during embryogenesis and wound healing. It may influence a number of other physiological processes, including phagocytosis. The concentration of plasma fibronectin and the distribution of tissue fibronectin are altered in disease states, although diseases specifically caused by quantitative or qualitative abnormalities of fibronectin have not been identified. Fibronectin is a Major Protein of Blood and Tissues Fibronectin is a glycoprotein found in the extracellular space of most tissues. It occurs in both soluble and insoluble forms. The concentration of fibronectin in plasma is approximately 300 flg/ml (1, 2). Soluble fibronectin is also found in amniotic fluid (3), seminal fluid (4, 5), joint fluid (6-8), and cerebrospinal fluid (5, 9). Fibronectin is synthesized and secreted in large amounts by a number of cell types in culture (see 10 and 11). Insoluble fibronectin is a component of fibrillar extracellular structures and basement membranes of all tissues with the possible exception of the nervous system (12).
