Hanks, Jr., Scholarship in Meteorology Undergraduat e The Father James B. Macelwane Annual Awards were established by the American Mete- award s orological Society to hono r the late Rev. Jame s B. Macelwane , S. J. , a worl d renowne d authority o n seismology, wh o was a geophysicis t and Dean of the Institut e of Technology , Saint Louis University , until his deat h in 1956. Award stipends are supporte d by Weather Corporatio n of America , private meteorological consultants, Saint Louis, Mo. The autho r of the paper awarded first place by the committee of judge s receives a stipend of $300, the autho r of the second place pape r receives $200, and the author of the third place paper receives $100. Th e purpose of these award s is to stimulat e interest in meteorology amon g college students throug h the encouragemen t of origina l student papers concerned with some phas e of the at- mospheri c sciences.
