As J most of these cyclones for m over the sea, space- born e platforms are especially useful for observing thes e systems. Moreover, durin g the cold season, lightnin g usually occur s over th e relatively war m sur- face waters , an d thu s lightnin g detection data ca n also help us study the evolution of convective systems. OBSERVATIONS . Durin g 4- 6 Novembe r 2004, a low-pressur e system formed over the southern part of th e central Mediterranean, namely, over the Gulf of Sidra. Durin g the two following days, the low- pressur e system moved northeastward, producing significan t lightnin g over th e sea, whil e o n 5 Novem - ber, heavy precipitation fell i n Crete; two stations in western Crete accumulate d mor e tha n 145 m m of rai n durin g the 36 h endin g at 0600 UT C 6 November.
