the Society's awards Society' s awards The Carl-Gustaf Rossby Research Medal is presented to individuals on the basis of outstanding contributions to the understanding of the structure or behavior of the atmosphere. It represents the highest honor that the Society can bestow upon an atmospheric scientist. The award comprises a gold medal and a certificate. The medal has on one side the insig- nia of the Society and on the other side the name of the medal, the name of the recipient, and the year. The award may be presented annually, but the Awards Committee should not hesitate to pass over a year when there is no outstanding nominee. The Jule G. Charney Award is granted to individuals in recognition of highly significant research or development achievement in the atmospheric or hydrologic sciences. The award (formerly the Second Half Century Award) was given for the first time at the celebration of the Society's 50th anniversary and is in the form of a medallion accompanied by a nominal stipend. The Council suggests that if more than one individual is elected to receive the Jule G. Charney Award, it should be for interrelated scientific contributions. The VernerE.
