statements of the American Meteorological Society A Statement on Policy and Procedures in Commissioning and Issuing formal Statements of the AMS as adopted by the Council on September 26, 1985 Authority and Procedures Th e Council is authorize d to approve and disseminate Statements on scientific matters , and o n matters pertaining to public policy. Furthermore , the Council has established a committe e on Public Policy (COMPUP ) which is responsibl e for preparin g Statements, subject to approval by th e Council. This Committee consists of the President, who is Chairman , the President-Elect, the three most recent past president s willing to serve, and the Chairperso n of th e Scientific an d Technological Activities Commissio n (STAC). In most instances, recent practice has been for the Chairperson of STA C to delegat e th e assignment of th e draftin g of th e Statemen t to an appropriat e technical committe e of STAC. In matters of urgency, and when the Council is not in session, the Executive committee is authorized to issue Statements based on not less than a two-thirds vote.
