SPECIAL COVERAGE The 79th Annual Meeting was held 10-15 January 1999 at Wyndham Anatole in Dallas, Texas. The theme for the meeting was "Cli- mate and Global Change: Focus on the Americas." The scientific aspects of this theme were emphasized, as well as the development of the bridge between science and societal needs. A special component of the meeting was the GATE Symposium celebrating the 25th anniversary of the GARP Atlantic Tropical Experiment. In addition to the Symposium on Climate and Societal Issues, which supported the president's theme, a number of conferences and sympo- siums were part of the meeting: 23rd Conference on Hurricanes and Tropi- cal Meteorology; 15th International Conference on Interactive Information and Processing Systems (HPS) for Meteorology, Oceanog- raphy, and Hydrology; 14th Conference on Hydrology; 13th Symposium on Boundary Layers and Turbulence; 11th Conference on Applied Cli- matology; 10th Symposium on Global Change Studies; Eighth Confer- ence on Aviation, Range, and Aerospace Meteorology; Eighth Symposium on Education; Fifth Conference on Polar Meteorology and Oceanography; Third Symposium on Integrated Observing Systems; Second Hayes Symposium on Seasonal to Interannual Climate Variabil- ity—The 1997/1998 ENSO Cycle; and Symposium on Interdisciplinary Issues in Atmospheric Chemistry (formerly Symposium on Atmospheric Chemistry
